ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Christopher Brownell, Ph.D.

Christopher Brownell, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Mathematics and STEM Education and Program Director of Mathematics Education, co-authored the book Math Recess Playful Learning in an Age of Disruption with Sunril Singh, a former math and physics teacher who is now an author and speaker on the beauty of math. The goal in creating the book was to combat the idea that mathematics is a static and dull endeavor and replace it with the idea that math is made by people who are playing with ideas, special relations between things, numbers, shapes, and other objects.

His work is with both in-service and pre-service STEM teachers focuses on providing content-rich courses that challenge paradigms and ask them to change their frame of reference. His research interests lie in how altering teachers’ frameworks can improve the overall learning experience of students in the K-12 system with regards to STEAM subjects.
